SisterLocks Feature: TomokasTwists

What made you decide to loc your hair with the sisterlocks method?
I wanted smaller locs and tried other methods but my hair would not hold.  Sisterlocks do not use products, but the pattern to hold, so that appealed to me too.

What hair phases have you gone through?
I’m been relaxed, natural, pressed, had a twa twice, transitioned for two seasons before cutting, and now I’m locked.  As far as locs, my hair has been through the budding, fuzzy stage.  Each loc matures at its own rate so some are completely locked while others unravel.

Describe you hair texture?
I have many textures ranging from 3A to 4A.  It is smooth, frizzy, medium fine, fluffy, springy, soft, and resilient.  It’s nappy and I’m happy!

How long have you had your sisterlocks?
I have had two sets since March 2007 as of date 3 years seven months. Time flies!

How longs did it take you to install your sisterlocks?
I did the front over a two week period and a dear friend who I was in the class with did the back in about seven hours.

How do you maintain your sisterlocks between re tightening?
I just let it be.  Rarely, I roller set them.  I try to keep them covered at night, but at some point I take it off.  I shampoo it and if it’s dry I just spray a little light moisturizer on it.

What method do you use to shampoo your hair?
I no longer braid and band like new Sisterlockers do.  I just get in the shower and shampoo.  I am mindful not to use my hair to scrub my scalp.  I’m gentle with it and just rinse until I think all the suds are out.

What products do you used to keep your sisterlocks moisturized?
Paul Mitchell awapuhi mist is my staple.  Sometimes I use Jamaican Mango Lime leave-in moisturizer on my ends.

How often do you get your sisterlocks re tightened?
I do my own so after I shampoo I do a check to see if any are extremely loose and retighten those.  Maybe once a month I’ll go through loc by loc and retighten close to the scalp.

Do you find your hair growing faster with sisterlocks??
I’m not sure if it grows any faster than previously.  It does maintain its length better since I’m not breaking it off.  Also, as my hair matures the shed hair becomes part of the lock.

How does one become a Certified Sisterlock Consultant?
There is a four day class to become a trainee.  To become certified one needs to complete three qualifying clients, client surveys/paperwork, photos, and pay the processing fee.  After that
you’re good for two years.

What goes on during a sisterlock consultation?
A whole lot of talking and photo sharing.  I gather the client’s hair
history and her ideas for the future of her hair.  The client is given a lot of information about Sisterlocks and tester locks.

How long does it take you to install sisterlocks?
I’ve had installs take as little as 9 hours to 21 hours.

How much is the install?
My suggested retail price is $500+, but I run specials.

If someone no longer wanted to maintain their sisterlocks, would they be able to take them down?
Yes, with determination, strong arms, and time, Sisterlocks can come out.
